[Moon-net] Sending "test" messages to moon-net - why?

Hi Ed,
I had also envisioned the reason behind the test messages being the cyclical
changes in message volume. I've sometimes wondered myself if the list were
active and in those cases I simply went to the archives to see if any messages
had passed by recently that I hadn't seen. I see no need for "test" messages
when the archives are easily available to all.
Even in the olde days of spotty connectivity (UUCP, dialup PPP, etc) there was
still not the volume of test messages on mailing lists that there are on the
modern moon-net list.
