I have used the diode method in a Yaesu az/el rotor with a pair of 5 wl. antennas on 144 mhz. It slowed the rotation down enough to keep the whipping down enough for the W2DRZ controller to keep from searching back and forth.

Hello all:

Although I sent Bill a response directly, the series of comments about the
speed of the 5500 made me think about the Alliance HD-73 and the way it slows
down the motor. In the "slow" (1/2 speed) position, a 3A 100 volt diode
(1N5401) is switched into the motor B+ line. It is paralleled to ground by a
220mf 35V electrolytic. (The motor cap is 150-189mf at 50 V ac across the
motor). Has anyone tried that method of slowing down the motor? 73 Chris
