One very important thing is that by knowing the angle at which
the wave arrives you can compute the optimum polarisation angle
to transmit (using the spatial offset as seen from the moon.)

If one only knows that the signal is similar in V and H, i.e. that
it is at 45 degrees, but with unknown sign, one can sometimes not
decide whether to transmit on H or V even though one of them 
would be totally useless and the other perfect. Not loosing time
in such situations is another great advantage with 45 degree switching
on the rx side. Surely having it on tx too gives 3 dB more signal 
now and then and that is also extremely valuable sometimes:-)
