Well I am not the person to ask. But I suppose it is because a lot of
people have asked for that class. At one time the ARRL asked for everyone's
opinion as to what should be done to improve VHF & up contests. Assisted
class was one of the ideas put forth. I guess lots of people thought it was
a good idea...

I saw that you asked someone else the same questions, but I don't see how
anyone could answer you with any degree of certainty. You could take a poll
if you want, but we all know how reliable polls are...

Not what I said. The problem is one of terminology. What I call a contact
you call a QSO. The official definition of QSO is not the same as the
definition of a contact. So the rules you quote, for me are the rules for a
contact, not a QSO. When there are so many different ideas of "what is a
QSO" floating around then it makes more sense to state the rules for a valid
contact and leave the word QSO out of the discussion.
But if we can agree that a QSO is the same thing as a contact, then we also
agree on what the rules are.
