When pasting links in to an email try to remember to surround the link with angle brackets. <.....>   
The brackets should be hard against the link.  Leave no spaces!

In most cases, (AOL can be problematic), this will avoid the (obvious) problems with long lines for your correspondent:

Now, if you are on the receiving end of a split link there is another simple solution.
The solution is to "forward" the email that you received.  But don't send it anywhere!

Hitting "Forward" will allow in-line editing of the received text and a little judicious deployment of the DELete key at the end of
each split line will join them all up again and allow you to click on the now reconsituted link.
