Folks,
There is a significant difference in the heat sink fin size between the popular Spectrian MMDS amplifier and the usual ex-cellular high power amplifiers. The 3G amplifiers are used in racks with forced air cooling and have relatively little fins.
I have recently been testing 3G (2.11 to 2.17GHz) REMEC, Global PCS, and PowerWave manufactured amplifiers on 2.320GHz.
The G-PCS one takes 4.7A at 47v (still using the -47v feed to the internal DC-DC inverter) when on, but not driven. At 200W output the current goes up to 17A before the protection circuits cut in and the power falls to ~150W That's 800W in for 200W output
That is about normal efficiency for these amplifiers. The amplifier gets pretty hot in the CW/JT65 mode!
However, a couple of small fans keep the temperature down to a reasonable level.
