a major step in the wrong direction for me.

I found the step from card decks on an IBM 370 to
CPM2.2 and then MSDOS on a PC quite straightforward,
but from there to Win 98 not so. Not at all.

I was lucky to discover Linux some years ago.
To me it works like MSDOS, a console oriented OS.
I can start "Win 3.11" (the name is X11 with the
console command startx) in case I want the graphical
interface, something I do not often want except
for searching the Internet or reading/writing E-mail.

With my own set of .bat files and several text
consoles I can work much faster than I can do in
graphical mode - and with much fewer mistakes.
(Like "turbo MSDOS")

Jerry, in your case with good experience in DOS and
therefore an understanding in command line oriented
computing it might be rewarding to have a look at
Linux in case you use the computer for other things
than surfing the net, E-mailing or as a multi-media
machine.

Win 98 is now obsolete and unsupported. In a couple
of years Win2000 and Win XP are gone and then one has
to use Vista if staying with Microsoft. I am an old
dog who is not willing to learn new tricks (unless I
really have to.) and going from Win 2000/XP to Linux
was like finding home again. As I understand it, the
idea behind Vista is to hide the computer as a machine
for the user who is supposed to enjoy the entertainment
flowing out from the magic screen with no worry about
what program is running or what the input data is.
This is fine for computer games of course, where one buys
a packet of mixed code and data and uses the packet
as is. It is not fine if you have your own data and
want to process it with various tools. When it comes
to music it is obvious why the industry does not want us
to have access to our data (that we might have bought)....
