The heater voltage of the 4CX10000D in the Racal TA1800 10KW amplifier is
run at 6,8V in standby mode.
It is raised to the nominal 7,5V only when EHT is switched on (operational
mode).

Running the heaters for some time at a voltage below the manufacturers
rating will poison the cathode !
Net result is a bang when you apply EHT and usually lower emission.
