Folks
Assuming a 3400MHz/144MHz IF system, one nice solution to the problem of obtaining a small, cheap, transverter to convert 3456MHz to something that can be tuned at 200MHz by anything other than an IC706 or IC7000, is to build one of W1GHZ's mini transverters. This is used to convert the 3456 - 3256MHz (LO) = 200MHz IF to 136MHz.
Paul published the nice Miniverter design in the 2002 (I think) Microwave Update Proceedings. The 200MHz helical filter is available from TOKO (I rewound a 160MHz one). I used a 64MHz TCXO to then produce a 136MHz IF, tunable at 136MHz on SSB/CW with an FT847. PCBs for the transverter are, I understand, available from Paul or by placing your own PCB order with the PCB house.
64MHz TCXOs are relatively common. A 56MHz TCXO would give 144MHz IF.
My transverter has 0dB gain and 5dB noise figure. It runs from 12V. I haven't bothered with the transmit amplifier, although for convenience I included the relay.
