Hugh,

1296 is undoubtedly the most popular eme band after 2m. It is also
easier to get on than any other mw band. After that the third most
active mw band is 10,368 MHz. It is more difficult but much
equipment is becoming available (esp. TWT's >20w).

As far as used/surplus equipment 1296 probably wins again. 1296 PA's
are frequently traded on MoonNet, e-bay, etc.

2-GHz suffers form the split freq. allocations so it requires more
receiving equipment to do world-wide eme. There is some surplus
equipment that can be used (esp. 2400+). WiFi and part-15 type
equipment incursion is making an impact on receive noise floor. I
have local users even up here in Alaska that make 2400-2450 virtually
unusable. We bought a wireless TV camera to monitor the dog kennel
(which cannot be seen from the house). It is plagued by severe
interference on all 4 channels it has. Cordless phones are active on
this spectrum.

Good news is that a ten-foot (3m) TV dish will work for most mw bands
up to 10-GHz.
My guess is you will find 1296 most active and not hard to set up
eme. This is where I am going, next...then 10,368 MHz.
I accidently have equipment on the workbench that will get me on 3456
with little extra (LNA and feed).
