[Moon-net] Global Warming

Iain,
I think the weather is returning to as it used to be in this corner, though
normally the winds tend to stronger nearer the end of the year. The rain
though has been much heavier than I can ever remember. All I can say is I am
glad it wasn't snow !!.
I live quite close (100 foot) from the sea with a clear aspect from East to
West via North, so tend to suffer some quite violent winds. The highest was
in 1988 (I think) when we got up to 138 MPH at Fraserburgh lighthouse which
is less than a mile from me. Never did find my 19 element 144MHz yagi !.
I tend to run a summer and winter antenna system.
Summer has the larger antennas on the mast, winter has only two bands and
smaller antennas. Even so have been caught out by a summer gale before now.
My mast lowers to just above the kitchen roof, and when the wind gets bad, I
drive the antennas to wedge them onto the side of the house, and then put a
rope onto the other end and tie the system so it cannot move. Two weeks ago
though I thought the stub mast was going to go as the wind was very gusty.
I don't run a dish on higher bands (except portable on 10GHz) as the only
position that would be suitable is also the most exposed. Even my 1.2 metre
DTH dish flutters badly in a high wind and that is behind the house.

The weather has definitely changed in this corner. You could almost tell
what month it was by the weather we were getting, but now it is much less
predictable.
Summer was always 2-3 days of sun, then 2 days of fog, then back to sun
again. Always had the first snow on the ground during the last week of
October. Always a gale during the first week in January, usually hogmanay
day. During winter if it was going to be windy it usually started on Sunday
night.

I think all we can do up here is live with the down time, and only run
during the summer months.

Regards,
Martin,
GM6VXB.
